If you have an uneven or low gum line, often described as a ‘gummy smile’, or if your gum line is uneven, then gum contouring can transform your smile and help create a smile that you’ve always dreamed of.
This gummy smile may make the teeth look square and short. Generally this condition is developmental or hereditary but may also be caused by certain health conditions or medications. Normally Gum recontouring is carried out when an individual has a particularly gummy smile where there is a larger proportion of gum tissue covering the teeth. Gum recontouring is very simple and relative process.
Currently gum recontouring is carried out under local anaesthetic with laser tissue removal or electrosurgery. Sometimes there may be occasions when small amounts of bone (ostoplasty) may need to be gently removed; we’ll let you know about this at the time of your assessment. It’s the bone which acts as a framework for the gums and sometimes this can be thick and bulky.
Healing is quick with lasers and electrosurgery taking just a few short weeks*. If you’re planning crowns or veneers after gum recontouring it’s best to wait six to 12 weeks depending on the complexity of the case.
